The Causes of Obesity Lie in a State of Mind

Studies from the U.S Surgeons General show that one of the most significant factors in the rise of an overweight population arise from the increasingly sedentary lifestyle that current generations are growing up in.  This is self evident to many but its underlying implications expose a perception that physical exertion is to be avoided.  The development of such a wide array of labor saving devices is sold on the strength that it is smarter to let the item expend the energy rather than use human energy.

The environment we live in is shown to be as crucial in our decision making as our mood or vitality.  Factors such as pavements, safety, distance and traffic all play a part of the attitude to avoid walking or cycling.   The development of healthy lifestyles is an interaction of the environment and the choices formed in response to it.

By eliminating many moderate levels of exercise at work and in the home, this has prompted a large increase for specialized high exercise recourses such as gyms and sports that compress the time spent using up excess calories in high levels of exertion.

The use of stairs instead of lifts where sensible, of walking or cycling are recommended as a way of integrating physical exercise, as is an attitude that transforms passive options and solutions to a days endeavor into dynamic active opportunities.  In social occasions possibilities also exist in many forms whether it is in walking for pleasure with friends or in more energetic ways such as dancing.  The emphasis is on maintaining the energy and calorie intake balance so that the accumulation of stored fats doesn’t increase.

The study also highlights how the energy of individuals is also affected by genetics and nutrition.  Whilst our hereditary history is not changeable, our diet and amount of exercise is.  It is on the keynotes of exercise and diet that the strongest recommendations for change are made by the US Surgeon General.
