The truths about ‘Surgery Protection Cover’ and what is, and what is not covered.
It gives us some concern that certain companies are now ‘playing’ on what we would call 'genuine concerns' that need addressing with respect to medical care, but not to be used to over emphasize and ‘play’ on natural pre-operation / operation worries!
WE HAVE ALWAYS INCLUDED THESE AS NATURAL/INCLUSIVE COVER, NOT ADDITIONAL!
This being ongoing since 2004, when we first started bariatric procedures some 6 years ago!
More importantly, this cover has never been called upon to date, (i.e. Intensive Care following surgery, or re-operation necessitated by complications arising from the original planned surgery, and without limitations to the number of covered nights hospital stay). This is perhaps due to the intensive pre-op tests, and surgeon’s skill, and worldwide recognised experience, placing this clinic within the top 10 in the world! – or is it just good surgical practice, therefore, negating the point of forcing these issues in the face of genuine worried clients?
Compare the facts today . . .
PLUS – If this extra emergency/surgery protection cover has never been needed yet, it might be more wise to ask, and disclose the more general, and not so much mentioned post-operative complications that may occur back at home, after months or years.
ABOVE, you will find disclosed our clinic’s figures, completed operation numbers, complication problems, % ratios, and possible cost implications that are not covered by immediate operation coverage / initial visit. – If you are researching / comparing your surgeon / clinic, ASK & GET THESE ANSWERS, as they are more of a true barometer of your surgical care!
• Assumptions: Client being an EU Member.
• NO BMI / AGE Limitations – If operated on, you are covered!
• All treatment / cover as medically needed within The Czech Republic.
• No set coverage maximums - Only as defined by EU reciprocal treatment scales.
• Standard hospital rooms / wards –private rooms maybe chargeable.

Introduction
Below, we have complied the clinic’s statistical data, along with possible actions and costs involved with adverse / complication associated with specific types of bariatric surgery. These figures are given as guidance only, and relating to medical care only.
Correct at time of publication - Feb 2010. E&OE
PRAGUE CLINIC
Clinic Insurance:
At this time, the clinic / surgeon has insurance coverage upto 4 Million Czech Crowns.
ICU Care / Extra Medical Care - Due to direct / secondary issues arising during operation / initial recovery at clinic:
More importantly, this cover has never been called upon to date: i.e. Intensive Care following surgery, or re-operation necessitated by complications arising from the original planned surgery, and without limitations to the number of covered nights hospital stay. In the event of this covered being called upon, there are no direct extra charges. • Assumptions: Client being an EU Member. • NO BMI / AGE Limitations – If operated on, you are covered! • All treatment / cover as medically needed within The Czech Republic. • No set coverage maximums - Only as defined by EU reciprocal treatment scales. • Standard hospital rooms / wards –private rooms maybe chargeable
BioEnterics Intragastric Balloon (BIB) System - Post Operative Issues / Statistics
Emergency Removal of BIB – In such case the BIB removal cost, at the original clinic of implantation will be covered by the clinic. However it has to be clear that the BIB removal was caused / necessitated due to proven adverse event caused by the product (BIB). This mean that the clinic in not going to bear the costs in case such as (but not limited to), the client returns to the clinic for nausea / vomiting, personal reasons, e.g. – discomfort, different expectations, etc., In such cases the BIB removal cost will be charged as per standard price of BIB removal. STATS: Number of BIBs fitted within last 5 years: 400 (approx) Complications Reported: The overall complication rate (BIB removals) so not exceed 1% There were no adverse events recorded to date. No clients required to undergo emergency surgical operation because of BIB No clients ended up in ICU
LAP-BAND - Post Operative Issues / Statistics
Faulty Band – Re-Operation and New Band Free of Charge If there was proven product-related failure, (i.e. band malfunction), the band will be replaced for free. However, it has to be proven / verified by the manufacturer and the site hospital that this is the case. This does not apply to know possible band-related medical complication, such as band erosion, pouch dilatation, band slippage etc., Post Detachment / Post Flipping Facts: In the case of post flipping / post detachment, the correction will be carried out at the cost of the clinic. However, if the client requests band removel because of the port detachment, this part of the operation will have to be covered / paid for by the client. Band Slippage Facts: Elective (not emergency) re-operation is usually needed. In most cases it’s possible to re-position the same band. In such case the client has to cover the re-operation costs (of course not a new band). Re-operations costs would approximately be (including pre-op tests etc.,) around 40,000 CKZ (£1,400). Pouch Dilatation Facts: Same as Band Slippage. Band Migration: This condition means that the band gradually cuts through the stomach into its lumen (from outside the stomach – where the band is placed during the operation inside the stomach). Such condition necessitates elective re-operation at the time when the entire band circumference migrates inside the stomach. Again, it’s usually elective, non-emergency procedure. During procedure via combined approach endoscopy (gastroscopy) and laparoscopy (surgery) the band is removed (with no possibility to fit a new band). Such procedure has to be covered by the client as well, at around 50,000 CZK (£1,700). STATS: Number of Lap-Bands Fitted: within last 10 years, >more than 3,000 Complication Reported: Band Slippage / Band Migration: Approx 3% Band Erosion: Approx 1% THE ABOVE STATED NUMBER OF COMPLICATIONS RANKS US, I WOULD SAY AMONG THE BEST 10 TEAMS/INSTITUTIONS LONG-TERM RESULTS WORLDWIDE.
SLEEVE - Post Operative Issues / Statistics
Only immediate, directly to surgery related complication which would necessitated immediate re-operation / prolonged hospitalization maybe covered by the clinic. Any other complication would not be directly surgery related, thus has to be covered by the patient. In such cases (non-surgery related complication) it’s difficult to place a figure on the re-operation / complication treatment costs, however we can estimate (roughly) it would be between 50-100,000 CZK (£1,600-£3,400). STATS: Number of Sleeve Procedures: 200 Complication Reported: < 1%
BYPASS / BPD - Post Operative Issues / Statistics
As per comments made about Sleeve procedure (see above).
