Obesity linked to Infertility

Women with a BMI over 35 reduce their chance of conceiving by half. Being overweight is implicated in many other complications.  Obesity is recognized as being the next major life threatening risk condition next to smoking.  It is associated with cancer of the breast, cervix, ovary and uterus and causes endocrine disorders that inhibit conception.

Recent guidelines in the UK make it harder for women with a BMI over 30 to qualify for fertility treatment on the National Health Service. However as 75% of IVF treatments takes place in private clinics that do not adhere to NHS guidelines, many women are putting themselves at risk.  Currently this is coupled with the trend of having children later in life when there is already a natural decline in fertility as a result, complications mount up significantly.

Studies show that even if conception is successful overweight women tend to have many more complications throughout pregnancy. Hypertensive complications, caesarian intervention, induced labor and excessive fetal size for gestational age are becoming significantly more common as our population becomes increasingly overweight.   Other effects can be birth defects, spina bifida and miscarriages. The exact mechanisms of how obesity impacts on fertility are not fully comprehended although there is an apparent insulin-mediated hyper stimulation of ovarian steroid production and a reduction of sex hormone-binding globulin.

Overweight mothers are much more likely to undergo caesarian births and encounter problems with anesthesia, infection, loss of blood and wound healing to name a few.  The effects of obesity are passed down to the child as there is 30% higher probability that the child will grow overweight if one parent is obese, this increases if both parents are overweight.

The analysis of many studies conclude, that the causes of this condition are influenced by economic factors, genetic history, nutritional awareness and an acceptance by individuals of their overweight condition.  At its base level, bodyweight is a result of calorie intake, metabolic rate and the amount of excise a person uses.  Much of the problem stems from attitudes and lifestyle.  Currently there are less and less reasons to exert oneself due to labor saving methods in the workplace and in the home. When combined with passive forms of entertainment such as television and computers there develops a toxic lifestyle which becomes the norm for many people.  There is a perception amongst many people that exertion is to be avoided and that it is to be avoided, or at least compartmentalized into sport or aerobics.

Although a sizable industry has grown that specializes in weight loss it is not yet halting the trend of obesity. Currently weight loss through dieting, exercise, apitite inhibiting drugs and surgery are the most common approaches to tackling the disease.  Success on a wider social scale requires a coherent educational program aimed at children and adults, combined with effective support for those that wish to lose weight.

Many experts conclude that there needs to be a change not only in how we perceive positive nutrition and exercise but how to implement them in our daily lives.
